Preserving an instructional idea worth rebuilding

HELP Math—historically short for Help with English Language Proficiency—was designed to develop mathematical understanding alongside the academic language students need to participate in math learning.

The original purpose

Mathematics and language belong in the same lesson

Historic HELP Math materials describe a web-based intervention for English learners and other students who benefit from additional mathematics support.

Its distinctive instructional goal was not simply to translate directions. Lessons connected mathematical concepts with academic vocabulary, visual models, spoken and written explanations, guided practice, and bilingual support.

What we are preserving

Instructional structure before technical nostalgia

The project archive includes lesson sources, interactive media, program descriptions, and research materials from different periods of HELP Math’s history.

The migration process treats those files as evidence. It must verify explanations, pacing, language supports, and interactions before claiming that a new implementation preserves them.

Where we are today

A public information site and private prototype phase

This release introduces the project and makes selected historical context easier to review. JavaScript prototypes and extracted assets remain private while validation and rights decisions are open.

It is not yet a replacement for the former learning platform. There are no active student accounts, classes, assignments, purchases, or progress reports on this site.

HELP Math 1.0 · Grades 3–8

A pre-pandemic online mathematics intervention

The archived HELP Math website described HELP Math 1.0 as a U.S. Department of Education-supported, research-based online intervention for English language learners, students with special needs, and other learners struggling with mathematics mastery.

That wording is historical context, not a claim that the former Flash-based service or its student accounts remain available today. The research record and important limitations are summarized on our Research page.

Source status: archived HELP Math pages. Descriptions such as “leading” are legacy self-descriptions and are not repeated here as current comparative claims.

Boulder Learning · HELP Math 2.0 roadmap

The proposed upgrade builds on HELP Math 1.0

Boulder Learning currently lists HELP Math among its products. The company was created in 2017 through the merger of Boulder Language Technologies and Digital Directions International, bringing together work in speech, language, artificial intelligence, research, data science, and education technology.

Boulder Learning has publicly described HELP Math 2.0 as a planned next phase in updating and relaunching the original HELP Math platform—not as a completed product that is publicly available today.

Source status: Boulder Learning product/about pages and its MIT Solve submission. Proposed features remain a development roadmap until separately approved, built, and validated.

Strategic modernization partnership

PedaNova and Dr. Peter Hu

Boulder Learning and PedaNova are strategic partners in the modernization of HELP Math 1.0 into HELP Math 2.0. PedaNova contributes educational research and application-development expertise to the collaboration.

PedaNova’s public website identifies Dr. Peter Hu (Hu Dongpin) as its founder and CEO. The partnership describes this HELP Math modernization initiative; it does not mean that every proposed HELP Math 2.0 feature has already been built or released.

Relationship status: Boulder Learning and PedaNova have bilaterally confirmed this strategic partnership for the HELP Math modernization project. The confirmation was recorded on July 21, 2026. Company and founder details come from PedaNova’s public website.

Language with dignity

Bilingual and academic-language supports should expand access to rigorous ideas, never signal lower expectations.

Student privacy first

The public launch collects no student learning data and does not ask learners to create accounts.
